Lures For Vets is a Veteran-owned business that makes a variety of fishing supplies such as casting and trolling spoons, inline spinners, etc. A percentage of their sales are donated to the Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation.
Lures For Vets also creates outreach packages which are given to Veterans and First Responders as a way of sharing the “gift of relaxation through fishing”.
Veteran Advance: What inspired the creation of Lures for Vets?
Lures for Vets: Inspiration came about after getting a Christmas present to create my own lures, after replacing lost stuff in my tackle box and my wife’s tackle box, I had lots left over. So with that I decided to start selling them and gift back to Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation, because if it was not for me attending the event, I would have not discovered just how fishing gives me the emotional / mental boost and a way to relax.
Veteran Advance: What has been the most rewarding experience with Lures for Vets so far?
Lures For Vets: The most rewarding experience so far is difficult to pick just one, I guess the biggest one would be how I had other tackle creators step up and send stuff to me to help put together the prize pack for the largest pike and walleye caught during WWW2017. The next in line I would choose, is the ability it has given me to connect with others (veterans and first responders) living with an OSI and how fishing gives us a positive common place where we feel we can open up with one another.
Veteran Advance: What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?
Lures For Vets: Normally I would say our cat, but seriously what motivates me each morning is the fact that during the day I can head out fishing, sit in my work space with music on and create some lures that allow myself and others to get on the water and connect with our peers to rebuild that connections we lost after the military service.
Veteran Advance: Who do you admire most, and why?
Lures For Vets: That is a difficult question to answer, as there are many individuals that I admire. To generalize my response, it would be those individuals that have walked in our boots / shoes and come out the other side with a desire to keep on living despite what we have seen or experienced.
Veteran Advance: What is your favourite quote?
Lures For Vets: Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, I would say my favourite quote is “Do or Do Not, there is no try”. Even though we attempt to get something started and it does not get finished, we have still accomplished one small project rather than not doing something at all.
Veteran Advance: Thank you, Clarence, for participating in this interview with us.
